Jewellery Week @ City Lit 9th-13th June

It was an action packed week for the Jewellery department at City Lit last week. We organised our own Independent Jewellery Week to celebrate everything we do in our jewellery community at the college. With the philosophy of including as many students as possible in the celebrations. Alongside our usual day and evening classes we organised a number of exhibitions and events.

We invited all the students in the jewellery department via their tutors to take part in a week long Pop-up shop with a changing display each day, showing work from City and Guilds students on both level 2 and 3, students studying on our Emerging Makers in Residence scheme, alumni students from accredited courses returning to do short courses who have also formed their group, the Keeley Street Set...and we were joined by special guest Claudia Rice who is collaborating on the live project for level 2 City and Guilds this year.

The students taking part each day were:

Monday &Tuesday - Emerging Makers in Residence Susheel Rao, Jo Teague, Emily Bedford, Billie M Vigne + special guest Claudia Rice.

Wednesday - City and Guilds Level 2&3 Neama Fathalla, Lesley Pollock, Karina Cabrera, Helen Woods, Kostadinos Karanikas.

Thursday - City and Guilds Level 2&3 Neama Fathalla, Sandra Bornemann, Lesley Pollock, Karina Cabrera, Kostadinos Karanikas. + special guest Claudia Rice.

Friday - The Keeley Street Set Susheel Rao, Kath Dare, Yeenam Chow, Julia Lyell, Brigitte Pividal, Linda Godfrey.

On Wednesday evening we organised a special making session "The Box", which saw evening class students team up with City and Guilds students, working in groups to create one piece of jewellery, in just a few hours! The session was team taught by Louise Seijen ten Hoorn and myself. It was a great chance for students on different courses to meet each other and experience a new way of making and thinking about jewellery. It was also a lot of fun!

Here are some images from the session, and you can read and see more about it on the City Lit Facebook Gallery.

And then to round up the week we officially opened the City Lit benchpeg awards 2014 exhibition on the evening of the 12th June. Our four judges attended and looked through the exhibition of works, selecting final winners in each area for a beginner, intermediate and advanced student. We invited all the students who entered the competition to exhibit with us this year and it was a fantastic display of work across all levels.

The judges this year were Liz Olver, Dave Merry, Sascha Hurrell and benchpeg. Also present at the event were our Sponsors Tamara Gomez, Elizabeth Bone and HS Walsh.

Congratulations to the winners:Advanced: Sandra Bornemann. Intermediate: Eleanor Watson. Beginner: Kim Witcher.

Rebecca van Rooijen, Co-Founder and Editor of benchpeg said "The judges had a hard task to decide a winner in each category, as with last year the standard of work, design and technical application of skills used to resolve each piece was higher than ever."

and here are some images from the evening which show what a great evening it was and what a great Jewellery Community we have at City Lit.
